At the end of the book of Joshua, after conquering the promised land, Joshua calls all of Israel to Shechem and tells them that they need to make a choice: choose God and worship Him and Him alone or choose a different god and worship it. He ends this discourse with the proclamation “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
Deciding that our houses will be devoted to serving God is an important decision. Its one that all Christians need to make. We can’t be luke-warm in our devotion to God. We need to be fully devoted. Which means we need to build our house on the rock, Jesus. The question becomes “how do we build our house on Jesus?”
At the end of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock” (Matt 7:24-25). If we want to build our house on Jesus we need to know His teachings AND apply them to how we live our lives.
In the month of May, our sermons will be devoted to building our houses on Jesus. Our sermons will include being single, married, raising kids, and raising teens. We will be looking through scripture to find principles of Christian living and looking at how we apply those principles to our lives and how we can instill those principles in our homes and make them evident in our lives.
