A preacher was saying that when his daughter Andrea was just 4 or 5 years old, she got a splinter in her finger. He took her to the bathroom and got out the tweezers, the ointment, and a band-aid. She looked up at him and said, “I just want the band-aid daddy.”
I can relate. It’s hard to address what’s hurting you. It’s painful. So, we put on a happy face and try to ignore it. We just cover up. Of course, it never gets better.
Many a sinful man thinks he can simply cover up his guilt. It’s not unusual to hear someone say, “I’m a good person” or “I’m good enough to go to heaven.” These are simply band-aids on a sinful life. No one is sinless, not one.
The forgiveness and healing of our sins was painful. It took the agony of the cross. If Jesus thought our sins could just be covered up and ignored, He certainly wouldn’t have gone to the cross. It was a vicarious death. Vicarious means it was done for someone else – you and me. “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried…. He was pierced through for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities” (Isa. 53:4-5).
The only path to forgiveness is to realize that there’s no cover up. If we confess our sin, He is faithful to forgive (1 Jn 1:9). We must come to the great physician. Receive His sacrifice for our sins. Healing can only come by God’s forgiveness. You can refuse His healing and forgiveness by just ignoring it and do your best to just cover it up. Or you can receive it in faith.
