This life is filled with disappointments that we just cannot understand. Hearing that the cancer had returned broke my heart. How could it? We prayed. We hoped. Never have we felt so helpless. It just doesn’t make sense.
Some are dealing with tragedies that make my worries and anxieties seem petty. Their trust in God is staggering. In the midst of incredible pain and agony, their life shouts a sermon of faith. As my friend Jeff Jenkins reminds us, “Sunday when God's Family gathers in thousands of locations around the world, there will be many who will worship in pain. Some will be experiencing excruciating physical pain, but they will worship. Others will be enduring emotional pain that is almost too great to bear, but they will worship. Some will be dealing with death, divorce, disease, and desperation, but they will worship.” There are those sitting in the pew next to you who are hurting as they declare their trust in God.
We can’t provide answers to one another that will always be sufficient, but we can turn to the God who cares. The Father knows what it’s like to suffer. He knows what it’s like to lose a son. God hurts when His children hurt. God is faithful. He offers hope, compassion, empathy and the promise of a better day. He has given us His Word to give us direction and comfort.
Pain is not welcomed. There’s the constant reminder that this world is not our home. We are strangers and aliens looking for our forever home. Heaven is where we belong. There’s a better place ahead. There’s a better day coming. There are no answers to ease the pain, but may His promises give us courage, comfort, and hope!
