Jesus spoke about a guy who was given a small fortune. He was given a “talent”. In the margin it says that a talent was equivalent to 20 year’s wages. That’s a lot of money! The story doesn’t say that he had any health issues, or that there was a family crisis with his wife or children. He had a great adventure in front of him. Invest this money during a bull market and enjoy life. Fear stopped him.
The Israelites were going home! After 70 years in captivity they were returning home. Some had been born in captivity and had never seen home. Some had never been to Jerusalem nor had they ever seen the Temple. Exciting, yes, but it was fearful too. When we think of fear we tend to think of crisis, danger, or being overwhelmed. However, fear can hit us when things are going well. The fear of the unknown can be crippling.
Everyone has experienced fear. Fear seems to be our default. One of the most common commands in the Bible is “fear not,” or “don’t be afraid.” These phrases appear over 300 times in the Bible. How do we live fearless lives? In one word, “God!” “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10). Do you believe these words? Do you trust God?
“Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
For the Lord God is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.”
Isaiah 12:2
Note that Isaiah doesn’t say when I’m afraid, I trust God. He says, “I will trust God and not be afraid.” Look to God. Know who He is. Know what He has done. Know what He promises to do. Trust in God!
