Today is the best day of your life. Enjoy today! Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not here.
Some prefer to live in the past. The good old days. Solomon warns that it’s not wise to ask, “Why is it that the former days were better than these” (Eccl. 7:10). Do you ever dwell in the past? The country was better. The church. Cars. People. Family. Everything was better. Solomon’s message, relax – good and bad are part of every life. Enjoy today. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. Enjoy the ride.
In the present there are mountains and valleys. There are struggles. Challenges. Things that frighten us. In contrast with the ups and downs of the present, it’s deceiving that when we look back, it’s a linear straight line. We’ve already made it through the past. Those hurdles are gone. The bumps have been leveled. Memory can fool us into thinking that everything was better in the past. God has already seen us through those dark times, and we’ve experienced our share of good. It’s not good to dwell on the bad things nor on the good.
The future can be just as challenging. Where’s our country headed? Will our kids and grandchildren ever experience economic prosperity? Will they ever be able to buy a house? Jesus said, “Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Mt. 6:34).
Trust God. After Solomon made the previous quote he said, “In the day of prosperity be happy, but in the day of adversity consider – God has made one as well as the other.” The Apostle wrote, “I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:12-13).
“This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
